The Lyon Collection is a contemporary interpretation of various typefaces cut by French punchcutter Robert Granjon in the 16th century. While best known for text types, Granjon cut a number of types that, while relatively small by today’s standards, were the display sizes of their time. Several of the Gros-romains (about 24pt) and a beautiful Gros-canon italic (about 48pt) from 1564 were particular influences on Lyon Display. This family is a decidedly contemporary take on the Oldstyle tradition, with crisp detailing and a wide range of weights, while still remaining faithful to the genre’s conventions: the contrast is far lower than what it would be in a display Modern, meaning that Lyon Display is usable from sizes as small as 18pt and up.

In addition to designing typefaces, Kai Bernau is also a book designer, which strongly informs his approach to type design. Lyon Text was conceived as a typeface for books, but has also found a home in a diverse range of publications around the world since its debut in the New York Times Magazine in 2009. Its marrying of classical Renaissance forms and proportions to up-to-the-minute contemporary type design techniques results in a perfect balance of tradition and innovation.
